Also at Septembers SLAM Last Friday, Michael Symthe exhibited a collection of photograph's taken of the deserted apartments in Wingrave House, part of the Heygate Estate. This was part of the Elefest annual festival 2011.

We had a lot going on for our last SLAM Last Fridays, here are some picture from our project space, we open up our resident artist's studio, giving visitors the chance to see Reuben Powell's completed as well as works in progress.

We also had a very interesting talk by Architect Dagmar Binsted, along with some fantastic Banjo music from Mark Kennedy.

Hotel Elephant Gallery is 15,000 sq ft office and warehouse building in SE1 close to Elephant and Castle and Borough.

We have a permanent Gallery space (1500 sq ft), event and project space (4000 sq ft) licensed until 2am and 5000 sq ft of vacant office studio space to let.

The available space is on three floors comprising of two open plan floors of approximately 1800 sq ft and the ground floor comprising of lobby and five smaller work rooms. There are kitchens and toilets on all floors.

The cost will be £15.00 per sq ft pa. This is inclusive of rates and power. This price may be negotiable dependent on size of rented area.

The space is available immediately and we are looking for occupants involved in all creative industries.

Show Time Again at Hotel Elephant!

Its show time again at Hotel Elephant and we are very excited by our first group show for the street side gallery space.

We are currently hard at work extending the gallery wall, priming and painting, not to mention the hanging and curating!

All in time for the private view this Thursday the 14th 6pm-9pm.

This trio of Artist, Hermione Allsopp, Joe Packer & Shuby have brought us:

'Interior States'

An exhibition of works with a shared concern with the interior.

Their works present us with created environments or re-done interior objects, displaying an interest in the used, discarded or tasteless.

Through a process of transformation the work begins to evoke a loaded psychological reflection on Interior States.

We will be celebrating the time that Emile Kelly has spent at the gallery over the last month, with an exhibition of the portraits he has collected from the local community since the start of his project.

Emile Kelly has set up a pop-up portrait studio and project space, the International Portrait Gallery, which will be open Sat – Weds at Hotel Elephant, 77 – 85 Newington Causeway.
Through the space he is offering photographic portraits to the local community, free of charge and obligation, in the hope of establishing collaborative relationships with willing individuals.

These individuals will become the subjects of my photography-based work, which is concerned with globalisation and it's effects on community and identity.

‘My belief ,’ he says, ‘is that the International Portrait Gallery can become a site of dialogue between the SE1/SE17 community and myself, and that this is the ideal context for the production of a challenging and compelling work, containing a multiplicity of voices, with subjects participating in their representation.’

He has created a large scale, aerial photograph of the area which he will be writing and drawing onto in response to the stories told to him for the duration of the show. I will also experiment with letting other people write and draw on this image.

The end result will be a map that documents and layers some of the narratives, lives and experiences that define the area, but are intangible and could not be captured by the objective nature of a "normal" map

The International Portrait Gallery Opens!

Emile Kelly's pop up portrait gallery opened today, we've got the coffee machine going and we are hoping to entice people in out of the rain! The new space looks great and Emile set up looks fantastic.

The International Portrait Gallery at Hotel Elephant is a pop up portrait studio and project space, running for the next four weeks. Through the IPG Emile will be offering photographic portraits as digital files to the local community, free of charge and obligation, in the hope of establishing collaborative relationships with willing individuals. These individuals will become the subjects of his photography-based artwork, which is concerned with globalisation and its effects on community and identity in Elephant & Castle.

The main aim of the project is to create an engaging and compelling artwork, framing this pocket of South East London in a post-colonial, globalised context, whilst also giving something to the community in the process. Collaboration between the subjects and Emile is a central strategy for two reasons: first, he believe's people should play a part in their own representation; this is often missing from photographic work that makes community its subject. Second, it opens up the process to potentially new and unexpected possibilities, both aesthetic and in terms of content.
